Is it true that Canadian actress Mary Pickford had a brother who also acted in films? Is it true that Canadian actress Mary Pickford had a brother who also acted in films?
Jack Pickford

Yes.

Jack Pickford was born in 1896 in Toronto, Ontario, as Jack Smith (Mary's real name was Gladys Smith). Although he was considered too short to be a leading man, Jack acted in many silent films, including Tom Sawyer and Great Expectations.

He also appeared with his sister Mary in White Roses and Just Out of College, and co-directed a couple of her films, although it seems he really didn't do much directing while on the set. Their sister Lottie also appeared in films.

Jack never achieved the fame that Mary, known to fans as America's Sweetheart, did. However, but his name was regularly in the news because he was linked to a variety of scandals.

Scott Eyman, who wrote a biography of Mary Pickford, mentions that Jack was known to his contemporaries as a ladies' man ``who was always loaded.'' His drinking problem is widely documented. Jack joined the navy in 1917 and took part in a scheme that involved rich young men paying bribes to stay out of war action. For his role, Pickford came close to being dishonorably discharged.

His first marriage was to actress Olive Thomas, who scored a hit in the movie The Flapper in 1920. The two were described in fan magazines as ``The Ideal Couple.'' In September of that same year, however, while in Paris on a second honeymoon with Pickford, Olive Thomas probably committed suicide. Eyman wrote that while the official version was that she died of accidental poisoning, the inside story was that she killed herself because Jack gave her syphilis. In fact, one of his nicknames around Hollywood was ``Mr. Syphilis.''

Kenneth Anger writes in his book Hollywood Babylon, which provides a gossipy look at the movie business, that Olive Thomas had been a drug user and was in Paris trying to buy heroin for Pickford, who was an addict. Whatever the true story, her death sent shock waves through Hollywood.

Pickford continued acting, last appearing in 1928's Gang War, but remained a heavy drinker and dabbled in narcotics. His sister Mary spent years bailing him out of scrapes and various financial problems. He died at the age of thirty-six in Paris in January 1933 of what was described as ``progressive multiple neuritis which attacked all nerve centres.'' More likely, he died of the effects of chronic alcoholism.
